February: International Boost Self‑Esteem Month🌟

As we navigate the school year together, we wanted to share some thoughts on a topic that plays a crucial role in your child’s success both in and out of the classroom: self-esteem. A healthy sense of self-esteem empowers children to face challenges confidently, build positive relationships, and develop resilience.

✅Why Self-Esteem Matters: Self-esteem influences how children perceive themselves and their abilities. When children feel good about who they are, they’re more likely to take on new challenges, persevere through difficulties, and embrace learning opportunities.

✅ What Healthy Self‑Esteem Looks Like:
  • Confidence in trying new things
  • Positive self-talk (e.g., “I can do this!”)
  • Willingness to ask for help when needed
  • Ability to handle mistakes and learn from them

🏡 How Families Can Support Self‑Esteem at Home

These strategies support children of all ages:
  • Praise effort, not just results (focus on persistence and growth)
  • 🧩 Encourage independence with age‑appropriate choices
  • 🗣️ Model positive self‑talk when facing challenges
  • 👂 Listen actively and validate feelings
  • 🎯 Set realistic expectations and celebrate progress

👶 PreK–Grade 2: Building the Foundation
At this age, self‑esteem grows through connection and encouragement.
  • 💕 Offer frequent praise for trying and helping
  • 🎨 Let children explore interests and creativity
  • 📖 Read books that highlight strengths and emotions
  • 🧸 Help them name feelings and problem‑solve together

📚 Grades 3–5: Growing Confidence
Elementary students begin comparing themselves to others.
  • 🧠 Emphasize that everyone learns at their own pace
  • 📝 Celebrate effort in schoolwork and activities
  • 🗨️ Talk about mistakes as learning opportunities
  • 🏆 Encourage participation in interests, not perfection

🧭 Middle School: Navigating Change
Middle schoolers face social, emotional, and physical changes.
  • 💬 Normalize self‑doubt and big emotions
  • 🤝 Encourage healthy friendships and boundaries
  • 📵 Talk about social media and comparison
  • 🛠️ Focus on strengths, values, and problem‑solving skills

🎓 High School: Identity & Independence
Teens are developing identity and self‑worth.
  • 🎯 Help set realistic goals and expectations
  • 🧠 Encourage reflection on strengths, interests, and values
  • 🗣️ Listen without immediately fixing or judging
  • 🌱 Reinforce that self‑worth is not defined by grades, popularity, or mistakes

💖 Valentine’s Day Challenge 💖

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s a perfect time to emphasize the importance of self-love. Encourage your child to recognize their unique qualities and strengths, and remind them that loving themselves is just as important as showing love to others.
  • ✍️ Write a kind note to themselves
  • 🌟 Share something they are proud of
  • ❤️ Recognize their unique strengths and qualities
